Safeguard your mobile – Disabling stolen mobile phone Tip

Filed under: Awareness,General,Safety and Security — Dinesh Gajbhiye @ 1:12 pm

You lost your mobile, you know somebody has it and can misuse it so what can you do now?

If you have the anti-theft software installed (high end mobiles only) you can trace it with the help of Police, but not always if the thief is really smart, moreover you can’t protect the low-end mobiles which doesn’t support installation, so what’s the best, simplest and easiest way to save your lost mobile from misuse? Here’s a good advice:

How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?

To check your Mobile phone’s serial number, key in the following digits on your phone:
*#06#

A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safeDo it right away!

Should your phone get stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless.

You probably won’t get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can’t use/sell it either.  And don’t forget to file a complaint with police about your stolen mobile.

If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones.

Please spread this useful information around.

  1. i tried it once but got an answer from mobile operators that they cannot block phone device, supposedly they dont have processes in place 2 do this though the technology is available by default.

  2. I lost my phone once, called Bell and they simply cancelled my phone! They even verified if someone had tried using it, so they would not charge me for the calls and automatically, if someone tried using it, it would be recognised as lost or stolen. Cell phone have a chip in them with a serial number wich, when you program the phone, is sent to your phone company, the same way cable modems do. When you turn on the phone, the connection, wich is similar to a modem connection, verifies your phone’ serial number and then hooks you to your phone company. They, in turn, when you use it, use the same system to know your phone number so they can start the meter for how long you talk and to what number so they can charge you! If the phone is not legal, whatever number you try will ring the operator.

BUT, there IS a service, that you have to pay for, wich permits you to localise a phone using a computer. This is usefull to localise you kids or just your phone, and then again, not all phones can use that service. In Canada, Bell cellular charges 5$ a month for this service and it’s called “Seek and Find”. I assume that every phone company offers it. Go to this link for a proof.

  7. It’s really amazing how people think here… I see a lot of comments here just asking to “trace” back their lost mobile phone.

Basically a mobile handset can be blocked by using it’s IMEI no. but the catch here is that the service provider will ask for FIR copy and police are often hesitant to file FIR on mobile thefts becuz majority of cases it cannot be traced and the case closed, the police also doesn’t want to hav so many open cases with them..

Also, I’ve heard that IMEI no. can be changed???? any comments?

  8. tracing a mobile is a sham, no-one can trace it, i had purchased the software from nokia software market, Security Genius S60 3rd edition, and istalled in my mobile Nokia N82, it got stolen. They told id you flash the Mobile the software gets uninstalled. The police can help by sending the IMEI number to the service providers, but why would they work for you.l You are not a minister or the ministers relative. High hopes anyone will trace your mobile and give it back to you

  9. Tried *#06# on a verizon phone and was told “sorry your call can not be completed as dialed”. Well, so much for that. As far as the imei number I photocopied that when I got the phone and keep it in a safe place.

  10. A week ago, my mobile N 72 was stolen. Immediately I called up & asked my service provider to block my SIM card. The service provider blocked the outgoing calls. The same day, I went to the Police and registered a complaint of my stolen phone. I also went to Nokia care shop to check if they can block my handset. But they said, there is no such system in existance which can block the handset as such. I got the same answer from my service provider also.
I am not knowing what can be done. Is all the ionfo we get on the net false or we are misguided by the service departments of the handset company’s and service provider? This is again a big question. Some one please answer it.

    • I am a victim of lossing mobile and searching around to disable the Hand Set. A Lost mobile is lost forever unless the theif returns back.
None of the three (Police FIR or Service Provide or the Handset Manufacturer) will either help you to disable your handset or to trace it.

  11. I have purchased a Nokia N70 music addition mobile handset from Mumbai. This mobile is stolen somewhere in Delhi metro station. I have lost all my sweet memories, pictures, contacts information, and videos with it. I wanted to block/trace my stolen mobile handset. I have the knowledge that lost handset can be traced with its IMEI (International mobile equipment identity) number. This is the UNIQUE number given to any mobile. With this number stolen mobiles can be easily traced or blocked.
Please help me to find/block/trace my stolen mobile phone. I will be very thankful to you for you support.
    Thanking you

I had lost my Nokia N70m last week at Hosur. When i slept in my friend room someone stoled without my knowledge. I have IMEI no and Bill also. When i called nokia helpline they told it is not possible to block ur handset still that service facility is not implemented in India it seems. So Kindly anyone can suggess what can i do further with IMEI no?

  17. Yesterday, I had lost my sony ericsson w200i. I have Bill and IMEI number but there is no use to block the handset. Both Mobile Network operator and Mobile manufacturer had no way to block the mobile.

They said to me, the IMEI number used to manually identify the mobile at any place in world.

I think, there is no use of IMEI number in India. Its same as like a Serial Number of a electronic devices.

My phone was stolen.I have contacted my service provider, surprisingly they couldn’t do anything to lock the whole handphone using the serial number given by me, so the myth saying that we can do so is not true…….at this 21st century…the service provider should enhance their technology on effort to draw down the rate of handphone theft…..its also a crime….for all service provider…try to think about something good to bust off the crime doers ways to find easy money…..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  53. LOST YOUR MOBILE ?

    FIRST BLOCK YOUR SIM
SECOND FILE A MISSING COMPLAINT WITH POLICE, THOUGH THEY ARE RELUCTANT TO FILE THE SAME.

I WILL EXPLAIN YOU HOW IT WORKS THEN…

    1. Based on your complaint, IMIE No. is shared by the Police with all the network providers.
    2. Service provider promptly responds to the Police with the new SIM Card no. & Mobile No identified by his tower and locality of tower
    3. Police asks for the call summary of newly installed SIM Card from the same Service Provider
    4. Once the call summary is shared, few numbers which are frequently called or received will be identified with their address (mailing) is asked by the Police.
    5. Based on the sharing of address the Police reaches the address of the Caller / Receiver who is new Owner (Stealer) of your mobile instrument.

I know this is a painful exercise for any Police when they have better things to do….finally you lost your mobile because of your ignorance
